Drambuie

Bavaria 960 (32’)

I live in Annapolis, MD, America’s Sailing Capital, by choice. Located on of the best cruising grounds in the world, the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is a Mecca of all forms of sailing from world-class racing, world-wide cruising, around the buoys racing, week-end gunk-holing, or merely going out for a two hour sail.  There is no better place in the world for access to information, boats, equipment, talent, events, and personalities having to do with sailing.

I learned to sail on my brother-in-law’s home built Alcort Sailfish at the age of 10 on Lake Ontario. I purchased my first boat, a 29’ wooden former Olympic-class Dragon “Beowulf” in 1975. In 1978, I purchased a newer fiberglass Ranger 26 sloop “Alacrity” that I sailed for 4 seasons. In 1981, I up-scaled to a 29’ Intrepid 9M “Cetacea”, my first boat with an inboard engine and steering wheel. In 1985, I took delivery on my current boat, Drambuie, a 32’ Bavaria 960 sloop.

Though receiving my initial boating training from the New York State Young Boaters Course as a youth, my adult training principally came from the United States Power Squadron. Initially, I took their public Boating Course, but soon joined the organization and became an active member, taking many more Power Squadron Courses, participating in piloting contests on a local and district level, and participating in numerous District Conferences. Ultimately, I led the Niagara Power Squadron as Commander in 1982-83.

After I relocated to Annapolis, I lived aboard Drambuie for a total of eight years. Once I became single again, I joined a regional club called “Singles on Sailboats” (SOS), a mid-Atlantic based group of about 900 singles interested in sailing and learning about sailing in the Chesapeake Bay area. Becoming an active skipper, I quickly built a network of friends and became active in the organization. I served as Chair of the Safety Committee, was elected to the Board of Directors, and served as Commodore in 2000. Currently, I lead the club's new activity for Bareboat Cruising in areas outside the Chesapeake Bay.

Drambuie and I now reside a Severn House condominium on Back Creek.
